Hair System Maintenance: Best shampoo and conditioner

Since investing in a hair replacement system can be quite expensive, it is important to follow a good hair system maintenance routine from the beginning. This way you can extend the lifespan of your hair system and avoid having to replace it too soon. One of the most common questions when learning how to maintain a hairpiece is, 'what is the best shampoo and conditioner to use?'

Before going out and purchasing any products, make sure you can answer a few questions about your hair system. Is it natural or synthetic? What are the washing requirements? Is it colored or natural?

It is always best to wash your hair system after removing it, though when you are in a rush you can also wash your hair in the shower! In our post washing your hair system in the shower, we discuss all the do's and dont's on how to best clean your hairpiece in the shower. If you haven't had a chance to read the post yet, we recommend that you do so for more hair maintenance techniques!

A big part of hairpiece care is not only how you wash it, but the products that you wash it with. It's possible to feel the difference when using low-quality products as opposed to high-quality shampoo and conditioner. The quality of the hair care products that you use is also important when prolonging the lifespan of your hair system, as poor-quality products can compromise the durability of your hairpiece.

Shampoo:

There are a few ingredients specifically that you should avoid in your hair care products when possible such as: sulfates, parabens, and sodium chloride (salt). These chemicals can be excessively drying, and avoiding them will extend your hair system's life span and maintains its lively shine.

What should your hair system shampoo include? Moisturizers are essential since they will bring your hair system to life and make it smoother. If your hairpiece is colored, it is also important that you get a color-friendly shampoo to ensure that the hair dye lasts. Non-color-safe shampoo, on the other hand, can cause the color to fade faster.

For human hair, a shampoo like TDi Shampoo with Silk Proteins is recommended, as it is rich in proteins and very hydrating. This shampoo contains many of the same hair nutrients and vitamins that are essential for healthy, longer, and stronger hair.

Another great option for human hairpiece care is the Remy Soft BlueMAX Moisture Lab 3 Step System which will cleanse, condition, and protect your hair system all for one low price.

Conditioner:

We recommend doing a deep condition of your hair system monthly - or preferably every other week. Ideally, your hair system can be conditioned every day, though life can be busy, and sometimes it can be hard to stay on top of conditioning your hair. If you're short on time, you can even make a home-made deep-cleansing conditioner (made from things you most likely already have at home!) that can be used on both growing hair and your hair system to keep them looking fresh.

Prefer to buy your hair system conditioner? Some of the top brands for hair systems are available in our supply store. A conditioner like Remy Soft BlueMAX Moisture Lab Recovery Cream is a great choice because it's color-safe and antioxidant-rich with different fruit and berry extracts that leave your hair system soft and protected.

The use of conditioners is essential, but it is also important to know how to apply them. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently spread conditioner through your hair system, avoiding contact with your scalp. After 3 to 5 minutes, thoroughly rinse your hairpiece with warm water, ensuring that there is no remaining conditioner. All hair should be hanging downwards in one direction to avoid hairs crossing over each other and tangling.

Conditioner is beneficial for your hair, but let’s go a bit further and introduce leave-in conditioners for hairpieces. Leave-in conditioners not only keep your hair silky, but many also contain sunscreen protection that helps prevent color fading from oxidation. Velvasil Leave-in Conditioner with Sunscreen, for example, contains sun protection that is important for synthetic hair systems. These conditioners are convenient, as they allow you to moisturize your hair while also protecting it from sun damage.

Looking for an extra boost for your growing hair? While you are most likely enjoying the confidence that comes with a new hair system, it’s important that you continue to take care of your growing hair. There are various hair vitamins that you can take in order to help support the growth of healthy and strong hair.

By choosing the right conditioner and shampoo for your hairpiece, you will be able to prolong its life and maintain its lustrous appearance.
