Seeing as your hair system is an investment, it is very important to take care of it. A big part of this routine includes washing your hairpiece is on a regular basis. We have already gone over topics such as removing stuck-on adhesive from your hairpiece, but how should you go about washing it? Is it possible to wash your hair system in the shower without removing it? Good news - it is!
While it’s possible to clean your hairpiece in the shower, in order to best maintain your hairpiece it's always good to remove it and give it a good scrub. This way, you are able to clean your hair system from the inside out, removing all built-up oils and adhesives. This allows for stronger hair system bonds and also ensures that you get the longest life out of your hair system.
This being said, we all have busy days (or days that we just want to hit the snooze button) during which you may not have the time (or desire) to clean your hair system fully. On these days you may just have to shower with your hairpiece on - fortunately that is completely okay! Here we will go over everything you need to know when showering with your hair system.
Preparation:
Before you get into the shower, there are a few things that you can do to prepare to shower with your hairpiece. You can start by combing your hairpiece gently with a wide-tooth comb and get rid of any tangles or snarls that may be hanging around. You can also take a moment to select your favorite shampoo and conditioner - we have many great products that will allow you to clean your hair system safely.
In the shower:
Once you are ready to get in the shower, the most important thing that you can do to protect your hair system is to regulate the water temperature. If the water is too hot, it can damage your hairpiece. This can result in additional snarls, dull hair, and a shorter overall hair system life span. In order to best maintain your hair system, it is vital that you use only cold or lukewarm water when you wash your hair system - in the shower or otherwise.
Once you have the water just right, you can jump in and start washing your hair system. Go ahead and fully wet your head. Try not to agitate your hairpiece too much with your hands, but rather, gently run water over it. Next you can apply a shampoo of your choice, make sure to fully distribute it over the entirety of your hair piece. It is important to keep in mind that you do not want to scrub the hair of your hairpiece like you would growing hair - since it can cause damage to your hair system or compromise the bond of your hairpiece.
You can now rinse your hair piece gently, making sure to avoid damaging the hairpiece or its bond. It's important that you wash away all remaining shampoo, since a build-up of shampoo can cause itching and compromise the bond of your hairpiece.
Once all shampoo is removed, you can go ahead and condition your hairpiece. In order to properly maintain any hair system, it should be conditioned on a regular basis. This is true of all types of hairpieces, though particularly so with those made of natural hair. To best maintain your hairpiece made of natural hair, you should always give it an extra dose of moisture to protect it and keep it from drying out.
What's next:
Once you're done washing your hairpiece in the shower, you should make sure to start drying it. Use a towel that is clean and dry to gently pat your hair- making sure not to pull or crunch your hair excessively. You should avoid using a hairdryer as the heat can damage your hairpiece and compromise the bond of your hairpiece.
You can also take this time to start brushing your hair. Make sure to be very gentle while brushing. Avoid brushing directly from front to back, as adhesive weakened by cleaning your hairpiece could come loose from the front of your head if tugged directly back.
