Whether you’re looking for a color that blends seamlessly with your natural hair, suits your age, or makes you stand out from the crowd, Advent Hair has something for everyone. Our experts shared their top tips on choosing the right wig color to help steer you in the right direction. After all, if you wear a wig, you might as well do it right.
Choosing the right wig color to match your natural hair
The best hairpieces are undetectable, and a color match is vital. One of the safest ways to ensure a color match is with a custom wig. This hair system type allows you to get into nitty-gritty details and refine each aspect of your hairpiece, from the hair density, texture, and style, to color, gray percentage, and highlights. To achieve the perfect color match, you can send a sample of your hair with your fitting template.
Choosing the right wig color to suit your age
Pay attention to details like hair color, texture, and density to provide a realistic and age-appropriate look. By ‘age-appropriate,’ we refer to being honest about your natural gray percentage and hair density. For example, a person in their early twenties is likely to have a healthy wad of hair and very little to no grays, whereas someone above fifty is naturally likely to have thinner hair and a higher gray percentage.
So, to achieve a truly natural-looking hair system as you age, consider decreasing the hair density of your wig and increasing the gray percentage. Most men start to go gray around the temples, so this is an excellent place to start for men’s wigs. Gray highlights can be made of synthetic fiber or human hair and are added in 5% increments to any hair replacement system.
While it may feel counterintuitive to look for a graying, thinning hairpiece, if it’s an undetectable, natural look you’re after, it is crucial to keep your wig in harmony with the natural aging process. After all, wouldn’t you rather look like a middle-aged man with great hair rather than a middle-aged man attempting to look 25?
Choosing the right wig color for a new look
Perhaps you’re looking for a wig to make a fashion statement or simply fancy a new look. Either way, these top tips will make sure you look the part:
- Make the change gradual.
If this is your first time testing out a new hair color and you’re not sure what to go for, start with one shade lighter or darker than your current color. Choosing a color on the opposite end of the spectrum, i.e., going from blonde to dark brown, can be too drastic a change, too soon. Instead, you could gradually change the color over a period of time.
- Look to your complexion for guidance.
The undertone of your skin - the subtle hue beneath the surface - is the key to determining the best hair system color for you. Most people fall into one of three categories: warm, cool, and neutral. Warm undertones will appear yellow or golden. Cool undertones have a blue, pink, or red tinge, and neutral undertones are somewhere between the two.
As a general rule, you should match your skin's undertone to your hair. For example, warm skin undertones pair well with warm hair colors, like reddish-brown shades, rusty oranges, honey hues, or copper, gold, and caramel blondes. Similarly, cool skin undertones look best with cooler hair colors, like icy platinum, sandy beige blondes, cool-toned reds, and purple-brown shades. The same applies to non-natural colors too. People with neutral skin undertones are lucky enough to look good in most hair system colors and should focus on searching for a shade to compliment their skin tone and eye color instead.
Once you’ve got the undertone right, you can have fun playing around with lighter and darker shades. Dark hair against fair skin creates a striking contrast and draws attention to your facial features. Though, going very light or very dark can risk making a pale complexion appear washed out. Opting for a shade close to your skin tone (light, medium, dark) or slightly lighter will brighten your complexion and give you a more youthful look.
- Look into your eyes.
Eyes, like your skin, are another good indicator of the best hair system color for you. Warm eye colors, like golden brown, green, hazel, or light blue, look good with warm hair colors. Cool eye colors, like dark brown, deep blue/blue-gray, or dark hazel, work well with cooler hair colors.
