Clip In Extensions & Short Hair: Possible?

Clip in extensions & short hair: Possible?Want to have long hair for a day? Saw a hairstyle that you feel you can pull off if only you had longer hair? Or maybe you’re just looking for a bit more volume? Don’t let your hair length stand in your way!

Short hair can be as versatile as long hair and there’s an easy way to pull it of: hair extensions. If you’ve never tried them before, there’s a chance you will feel a bit intimidated by them at first. But everybody does!

Keep on reading and check out our handy tips to make everything hair clip related as easy as it can get. Once you get comfortable around clip-ins, you’ll have endless possibilities of length, volume, and hairstyles!

With hair systems, we know one of the main concerns about hair extensions is whether or not people will notice, and if you have short hair, you might feel particularly prone to this issue. Don’t worry, regardless of the length of your hair, extensions are actually easy to camouflage. As usual, practice and patience is all it takes, so let’s get to it!

What in the world is a “weft”?

Before we start though, we want to get you up to speed with some hair extension slang, because you’re going to be hearing the word weft pretty often. When it comes to extensions, you can take the word weft as “units”. A weft basically is each group of hair locks attached to the clips.

Wefts can vary in thickness, length, and color, so it is best to carefully choose the one that matches your natural hair the most.

Have your hair extensions already?

Now, we assume that you have your clip-in extensions already while you’re reading today’s blog post. If that’s not the case, head to Advent Hair’s line of clip-in extensions and choose from a variety of colors of the Clip In Remy Hair Extensions. They can be curled, straightened, washed and colored! Remember that, when shopping for clip-in extensions, you should also keep the thickness of your hair in mind so it blends in better.

Creating a seamless look

Once you have your extensions and you’re ready to put them on, start off by brushing both your clip-ins and your hair to get a seamless look.

You should use a brush that’s specially made for this, like the Remy Soft 123 Loops Brush, it is designed to maintain the natural appearance of your replacement or enhancement hair, with loop bristles that won’t catch on hair extensions or wigs.

Also, as we said before, make sure your current hair texture matches your clip-ins.

What do we mean by this? If you have curly hair but are planning to wear straight hair extensions, you should style your hair accordingly. The same applies the other way around.

All done? It’s time to get those locks on your head! We warn you –this might be a bit of a trial and error process, especially if you’re just getting started. This process tends to vary from person to person as each one of us finds what suits us the best. Just be patient and you’ll get there soon enough.

Let’s do this!

Getting your hair ready

You’ll save yourself a mess if you start by clipping your extensions at the bottom and then work your way up, so go ahead and section the bottom layer of your hair by parting it around your ear level. Your part doesn’t have to be perfect, this is just to get the upper section of your hair out of the way and have a clearer view of what you’re doing.

So, with the first section, the one that’s closer to the nape of your neck, you should brush in an upwards motion from the tips to the roots. This teasing will help you develop a secure padding for your hair extensions while hiding your short hair so it doesn’t give you away.

When you’re done, roll it in a small bun and pin it tightly to your scalp.

Start clipping

The next step: clipping your extensions. Sounds scary, but the great thing about clip-ins is that you can take them off whenever you want, so if you feel like you didn’t place them correctly, you can just remove them and try again until you nail it.

When positioning your extensions, it’s best if you don’t clip them right to your scalp. This can feel really uncomfortable if you plan to wear your extensions for a long period of time. For some people, this can also cause some itchiness or irritation on your skin. If that’s your case, try clipping them a tiny bit lower so the clips are attached to your hair rather than straight to your scalp.

How should you be clipping your clips?

Now, we recommend you to start with 3 clip wefts on this part, but you can try 2 clip wefts too. It all depends on your hairstyle, the shape of your head, and how you feel most comfortable. You’re welcome to play with it until you find what looks more natural on you, just make sure they’re properly aligned.

Also, if your wefts vary in thickness, we recommend you clip the thicker ones on the bottom and the thinnest ones on top to achieve a more natural look.

Regardless of how many clips your weft has, here’s a pro tip for you: try clipping the middle clip first, then finishing with the outer clips. This will make it easier for you to control your extension placing!

Stop. Check. Continue. Move up.

Now, take a good look in the mirror. This first weft is the most important one to get right, because it is the one that can give you away the easiest. Look from every possible angle to make sure there are no short hairs sticking out, specially at your neck level.

Moving on. Once you’re done with the first weft, part you hair about an inch higher to continue and repeat this process until you’re done. We recommend you switch to 2 clip wefts and place them to the sides of your face as you reach the widest part of your head, but as we said before, this varies from person to person. The important thing is that you feel happy and comfortable with the end result.

Blend again

As you go up, you’re probably going to have some short hair strands mixed with the long extensions. This is perfectly fine and will actually help you achieve that natural look. If you feel that those short strands make too much of a contrast with the longer locks, you can straighten or curl-iron both of them together so they blend in and the difference between one another won’t appear to be too obvious.

Going higher

As you go higher, be careful not to clip your extensions too close to the top of your head; you shouldn’t go higher than your eyebrow level. Remember, the gaps between each weft should be small. If you feel like it’s hard to secure your wefts to the sides, you can always tease your hair a bit just like you did with the lower section of it. Just don’t over do it with the sides of your face or you will get the opposite of natural looking extensions. And that’s about it!

You’re all set to recreate all those hairstyles you’ve been dying to pull off, just remember to take proper care of your clip-ins so they keep their quality and last a really long time. Have fun!
