Your basics guide to clip in extensions

To all those women who are exploring the world of hair extensions, welcome to endless possibilities of length, volume, and hairstyles! As with hair systems, we know the main concern about hair extensions is whether or not people will notice, but don’t sweat it!

We can show you how to camouflage your clip-in hair extensions like a pro, just follow these simple steps and your hair will look as natural as never before.

Before we start, we want to get you up to speed with some hair extension slang, because you’re going to be hearing the word weft pretty often. When it comes to extensions, you can take the word weft as “units”. They’re each group of hair locks attached to the fabric and, in this case, clips. This is important to explain because as wefts can vary on thickness, length, and color, they can also vary on the amount of clips. We’ll come back to this shortly.

Now, we assume that you have your clip-in extensions already in hand while you’re reading today’s blog post. If that’s not the case, why don’t you head to Advent Hair’s line of clip-in extensions and choose from a variety of colors of the Clip In Remy Hair Extensions? They can be curled, straightened, washed and colored! Remember that, when shopping for clip-in extensions, you can also keep in mind the thickness of your hair so it blends in better.

Once you have your extensions and you’re ready to put them on, start off by brushing both your clip-ins and your hair. You should use a brush that’s specially made for this, like the Remy Soft 123 Loops Brush, a brush designed to maintain the natural appearance of your replacement or enhancement hair, with loop bristles that won’t catch on hair extensions or wigs.

Also, make sure your current hair texture matches your clip-ins. What do we mean by this? If you have curly hair but are planning to wear straight hair extensions, you should style your hair accordingly. The same applies the other way around.

All done? It’s time to get those locks on your head! We warn you this might be a bit of a trial and error process, especially if you’re just getting started. This process tends to vary from person to person as each of you finds what suits you the best. Just be patient and you’ll get there soon enough.

Let’s do this! You will save yourself a mess if you start by clipping your extensions at the bottom and then work your way up, so go ahead and section the bottom layer of your hair by parting it around your ear level. Your part doesn’t have to be perfect, this is just to get the upper section of your hair out of the way and have a clearer view of what you’re doing.

If your bottom section is too short and you’re planning on wearing long extensions, you can braid that bottom half of your hair so it doesn’t stick out. That’s right! Just wrap that braid in a small bun and pin it to make sure it’s secured, and we guarantee it’ll be out of sight.

The next step would be clipping your extensions. Sounds scary, but the great thing about clip-ins is that you can take them off whenever you want, so if you feel like you didn’t place them correctly, you can just remove them and try again until you nail it.

When positioning your extensions, it is best if you don’t clip them right to your scalp. This can feel really uncomfortable if you plan to wear your extensions for a long period of time and, to some people, it could cause some itchiness or irritation on your skin. Instead, clip them a tiny bit lower (just a little!) so the clips are attached to your hair rather than straight to your scalp.

Now, clip your wefts one next to the other along your first part, and make sure they’re aligned so some of the strands don’t fall lower than others. We recommend you to start from 2 clip wefts on this part, and then build up to 3 or 4 clip wefts as you go higher. But as we said before, this varies from person to person. Some people prefer to apply 4 clips at the middle part and then top it off with 3 clips. It all depends on your hairstyle, shape of your head, and how you feel most comfortable. You’re welcome to play with it until you find what looks more natural on you.

Moving on. Once you’re done with the first wefts, part you hair about an inch higher to continue and repeat this process until you’re done. Be careful not to clip your extensions too close to the top of your head; you shouldn’t go higher than your eyebrow level. Also, if your wefts vary in thickness, we advise you to apply the thicker ones on the bottom and the thinnest ones on top to achieve a natural look.

And that’s about it! You’re all set to recreate all those hairstyles you’ve been dying to pull off, just remember to take proper care of your clip-ins and they will maintain their quality and last a really long time. Have fun!
