Back in the day, most wigs, toupees, and hair systems were very simple. There were only a few options for types and styles. With fashion trends changing ever so often, it is important that hair wearers have access to as many options and types as possible.

There are various hair textures and types in the world, so it should not come to a surprise for us that hair systems have revolutionized to match those different types and textures. This new standard has allowed hairpieces to look and feel as natural as possible. Never has it been more difficult to spot or point out someone who is wearing a hair system, and that is simply fantastic!

Many hair system wearers value their privacy and would prefer that no one know that they wear a hairpiece. All the new textures and styles available for hair systems offer wearers the perfect blend between being unnoticed and staying current and fashionable.

Hair Texture

As we all know, hair exists in a variety of textures. But why? There are three main aspects that influence hair texture: curl pattern, volume, and consistency. Scientists believe that the shape of the hair shaft has an effect on the curliness of the individual’s hair. A very round shaft results in straight hair, while the flatter the hair shaft, the curlier your hair gets.

As the hair follicle shape determines curl pattern, the hair follicle size determines thickness. As a result, hair volume can be thin, normal, or thick. The consistency of hair is determined by the hair follicle and the condition of the strand. There are three categories of hair consistency: fine, medium, and coarse. Fine hair has the smallest circumference, coarse hair has the largest circumference, and medium hair is anywhere between the other two.

It is necessary that all hair system wearers understand their hair texture in order to properly identify which hair system type will be suitable for them.

Understanding an individual’s hair type is essential for selecting and taking care of a hair system. There are various systems in place that allow people to classify their curl patterns. These systems help individuals discover their hair type and also help them identify if they have more than one kind of hair type.

One of the most well-known and commonly used systems is the Andre Walker Hair Typing System. The creator of this system is, of course, Andre Walker, who is the hairstylist of Oprah Winfrey. This system establishes four types of hair: straight, wavy, curly, and kinky.

Straight hair is considered type 1, which reflects the most sheen and resilient hair of all the hair types. This type of hair is very hard to damage and difficult to curl. It is also the oiliest hair type of all because the sebum easily spreads from the scalp to the ends without curls.

Type 2 is wavy hair, which has a texture and sheen that fall between straight hair and curly hair. This type of hair is more likely to become frizzy than straight hair. This type of hair is a bit tricky because type 2A waves can easily alternate between straight and curly styles, while type 2B and 2C wavy hair are resistant to styling.

Type 3 resembles uppercase and lowercase S-shapes and Z-shapes. You might be able to guess that type 3 refers to curly hair. This hair type is usually voluminous, “climate dependent”, and damage prone. Curly hair requires proper maintenance and care to avoid less defined curls.

Kinky hair is the 4th and last type of hair. Its features include a tightly coiled curl pattern, fragility, and high density. This type of hair shrinks when wet and is more susceptible to damage.

As you can see, there is a lot to consider before choosing the perfect hair system that matches your hair type. Luckily, Advent Hair provides buyers with many options in types of hair and textures within their hair systems.
