Here are three key things to consider when you are purchasing your toupee that will help you to look and feel your best, even when experiencing hair loss:
1. Be true to your style
The most important element of selecting the right toupee is investing the time to find a piece that matches with your personal style and remaining hair. If you will only be using the hair piece to cover a portion of your head that has experience balding or hair thinning, you will want to be absolutely certain that the toupee will match up with the style, color, and texture of your current hair so that it appears as one natural and continuous unit.
Men who have experienced total hair loss have a couple of options. Some individuals are most comfortable finding a toupee that appears very similar to what their natural hair looked like. Other men prefer to try something new. If you decide to go for a whole new look, be sure that your new hair style is a reflection of who you are, and still maintains a natural look.
2. Select the best material
When selecting your new toupee you will need to decide between a piece that was constructed of synthetic hair or of human hair. Advancing technology and craftsmanship have allowed for the creation of very realistic and natural looking synthetic toupees at a lower cost than human hair wigs. You need to be mindful, however, that synthetic pieces are very susceptible to heat damage and may irritate your skin if you are particularly sensitive to foreign materials.
Human hair toupees will look and feel much more like your own hair. Unlike synthetic wigs, which should be washed with specialized shampoos, you will be able to wash your human hair toupee more regularly and with standard shampoo. Though these pieces are more costly than their synthetic cousins, many men feel that they are worth the investment. Should you decide to purchase a human hair toupee, however, be sure that it is of the highest quality. Remember: a quality synthetic toupee is better than a poorly crafted human hair toupee.
3. Have your hair piece fitted
Though you can fit and attach your toupee on your own, you must be very confident in your ability to do so, as an improperly fitted hair piece can easily be spotted by others. Visiting a trusted barber or hair stylist will help you to ensure that your toupee will be custom fit to your head, and that you look your best while wearing it. While there, he or she may offer to trim or style the hair piece slightly so that it suits your face even more. If you have selected an extended wear toupee, you may have your stylist attach the piece for you so that it is precisely affixed to your head. If you plan on wearing your toupee only during the day, ask your barber or stylist to show you the best tricks to keeping your piece looking its best through proper styling, cleaning and care techniques.
Either way you choose to go, Advent Hair has you covered. At one point or another, we have all encountered an individual sporting a toupee that is anything but natural looking. Though we make jokes about these sort of people on TV and in the movies, there is no shame involved in wearing toupees, and when you take the time to find a hair piece that suits you, no one will even be able to tell that you are wearing one.
