Men's Hair Pieces - Choosing the Right Base Style For You

Men's Hair Pieces

When you look at a person, the first thing you notice is their face, which includes their hair. For this reason, the issue of baldness can weigh heavily on a person's self-esteem. Thankfully, for the people who suffer from hair loss, in particular men, there are many options to help them. When selecting a man's hair piece, it is important to take into consideration the base style — the part of the piece where the follicles are sewn.

There are three main types of hair piece bases: polyurethane, lace and nylon.

1. Polyurethane

A polyurethane base, also known as a skin graft, is the option that is most like real skin. It is available in different thicknesses, with the thinner versions being very delicate and completely see-thru. Skin bases are popular due to the fact that they allow for a natural appearance, as if the hairs were actually growing from the scalp. Many disposable hair pieces are composed of this particular material. If you're an active male, this option may not be the best for you, as it doesn't breathe well and can be quite hot. An ideal attachment is with a full bond adhesive so that the skin base feels like a second layer of skin.

2. Lace

If you want comfort, lace definitely is an option for you. Lace hair pieces allow air to flow through easily. Lace is available as swiss, french and welded mono.  Like polyurethane, lace provides a very natural looking appearance. This is because the front of the piece is very fine and nearly invisible. If you're a bit rough with them, you may want to refrain from a lace base, since it's easy to rip the delicate material. It will break down faster than polyurethane or nylon, so you may need to replace it more often. You can use either lace tape, bonding tape or polyfuse adhesive to attach a lace piece.

3. Nylon

If you choose to use a nylon base, you have a choice between fine mono and super fine mono. Compared to other base options, nylon is most similar to lace, without the worry of wearing an extremely delicate material. Men who are active or sweat easily may want to consider a nylon base, because the air flows freely through the material, especially when compared to polyurethane. Generally, the appearance of nylon is not as natural as lace; however, it is less complicated to remove. The risk of tearing it is not as great as lace. Attachment can be with tape, clips and/or adhesive.

4. Combinations

Some hair piece bases combine material. These options tend to provide the benefit of two or more of the materials, minus the downside of them. An example of a hybrid hair piece is one that is constructed from lace, but has a perimeter comprised of polyurethane. The polyurethane allows for easy attachment, while the lace supplies a natural appearance.

Whichever base type you choose, you can rest assured that Advent Hair has you covered.
