Most people believe that shampooing their hair system on a regular basis will help it look better and healthier.
However, if done more than recommended, you are at risk of drying out the hair, resulting in tangles and a shortened hairpiece lifespan.
Instead, over-washing can damage your hair system. For that reason, we recommend shampooing your wig once or twice a week at the most.
If you shampoo your hair system more frequently, you’re risking drying out your hairpiece, causing tangles, and shortening its lifespan. Washing your wig correctly is an essential part of a thorough hair system maintenance routine though.
Today, we’ll be going through a step-by-step guide to washing and caring for your hair system.
Pour a small amount of shampoo into the palms of your hands and apply it to your hair system, one section at a time. Start at the roots and make your way to the tips of the hair strands. Ensure each part of your hairpiece is coated with shampoo.
When applying the shampoo to your wig, try to do so softly and not too harshly. Don’t rub the strands together or matte your hair as this can create friction and cause unwanted tangles. Use your fingertips and palms to gently apply the shampoo to your hair strands.
Use warm, (not hot water) to rinse the shampoo out of your hair system. Hot water can also cause tangles to build up so make sure you keep the temperature tepid. Use a shower head from the roots of the hair system downwards to help the water flow naturally and prevent any tangling. Make sure you remove all the shampoo from your hair system to prevent shampoo from building up and an itchy scalp.
If you like to use a blow dryer on your hair system, make sure you use it on low heat or cool setting to prevent the hair strands from drying out too much. If you use a towel, choose one that’s made from cotton fibers and pat dry your hairpiece - don’t ever rub it.
We recommend always using a conditioner after shampooing your hairpiece. This will help preserve the hair supply’s moisture and keep it looking natural and healthy.
The secret to having a healthy, soft, and hydrated hair system is using leave-in conditioners.
Always use a special conditioner designed for a hair system and not regular human hair. You can apply leave-in conditioners to wet hair after shampooing your hair system or directly to dry hair.

Apply the conditioner to the shaft of the hair strands, working it in gently - don’t apply it to the scalp or the base of the hair system.
Applying a leave-in conditioner to dry hair before brushing is a great way to ensure you’re not unnecessarily tearing out hair strands, as the conditioner helps allow the brush to slide through the wig.
