Forget about a bad hair day, with winter on our doorstep we’re looking at months of everyday hair struggles. That’s right, even wigs succumb to the winter frizz; the dry, cold, and windy weather can be damaging to hair, whether you wear a wig or not. Low humidity levels combined with cold weather and dry central heating can make your hair more brittle and prone to breakage, as well as looking dry and frizzy.
Luckily, our hair experts have plenty of winter wig care tricks up their sleeve to help you protect your hair replacement system and keep it looking silky smooth; without having to take a trip to the salon or a Hair Club for Men! Take care of your hair system for men this season by following these simple steps:
Defend your hair against the moisture-zapping cold air by maintaining a strict wig care routine and conditioning frequently. The secret to a soft and luscious looking men’s wig, a good conditioner helps your hair retain its moisture. So, after washing or wetting your hairpiece, gently and evenly massage it in. Start from the top of your hair and work your way right down to the tips, allowing it to sit for five minutes before rinsing.
For an extra-deep condition and to protect your wig against dryness, UV damage, and shedding, follow up with a leave-in conditioner. Again, gently massage the conditioner into your hair and then place a shower cap over the hairpiece, leaving the product to work its magic for another ten to fifteen minutes. Then, comb out the wig without rinsing away the deep conditioner. If you prefer an organic treatment, you could try making your very own homemade deep conditioner instead!
Instead, dry your men’s wig off with a towel or a cotton tee shirt, and let it air dry on a wig stand to help maintain its shape. To avoid getting sick from going out with wet hair, make sure to leave plenty of time to wash your wig and let it dry inside. It can also be useful to keep a spare men’s wig to hand, so you can alternate between the two.
A tip for year-round hair system protection; if you live in a zone with hard water, install a shower head with a water filter. Hard water contains lots of harsh minerals that can be harmful to both your body and your hair, making it dry and brittle. By installing a filter, the water will be softer, and so too will your hair!
Despite spending more time indoors in the winter months and settling into holiday mode, it doesn’t mean you’re off the hook when it comes to your wig care and maintenance regime. Rather, take the time to pamper yourself and your wig, so you can step into the new year looking dapper and refreshed.
