Scalp Maintenance 101

Written by Jeff Waite | Feb 22, 2020 1:27:19 PM

One of the easiest things you can do daily to make sure your hair system remains in great condition is to keep up on proper scalp treatment. Scalp maintenance ensures that your scalp is healthy and clean prior to affixing your hair system. This is important because in order for many types of liquid adhesives or tape to work properly, the scalp needs to be cared for.

We’ve broken down some of the most common scalp issues and how to maintain a healthy scalp so that you’ll look and feel your best!

Time to take control of your Scalp Maintenance!

The scalp is a very sensitive area of the body that requires lots of care and maintenance.  For some people, their scalp might be prone to certain scalp conditions due to different genetic or lifestyle factors. If you find that your scalp isn't feeling as healthy as it used to be, it's critical that you recognize your symptoms and seek treatment. Along with common scalp issues we’ve recommended some at home and over the counter remedies that help with a wide variety of scalp conditions.

Eczema

Eczema can be found anywhere on the body including the scalp. Characterized by a red or brown rash made of small raised bumps, scalp eczema can stem from an immune system reaction where your body can mistake harmless substances as invaders. This causes inflammation to protect your body from these supposed threats.

Scalp maintenance remedies that help alleviate scalp eczema symptoms include coal tar and evening primrose oil.

Dandruff

Dandruff is a very common scalp issue where white and yellow flakes form on the scalp. You can often tell if you have dandruff because the flakes will be visible in your hair and will fall on your shoulders when you touch your hair. Dandruff is mostly caused by skin that is too dry or too oily, but it can also signal an overproduction of yeast on the scalp.

Scalp maintenance remedies that help ward of dandruff are shampoos that contain zinc pyrithione, coal tar or salicylic acid.

Scalp psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is a scalp issue that is caused by a buildup of skin cells that are being shed slower than they normally should. Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body and looks like  red patches that are topped with silver flakes. This is caused by a malfunction in the immune system.

Scalp maintenance remedies for psoriasis should include coal tar, salicylic acid and aloe vera extract.

Folliculitis

A bacterial infection of the hair follicles that causes bumps to appear that can resemble whiteheads or red blisters.

Scalp remedies for folliculitis need to contain antibacterial ingredients. Shampoos with tea tree oil, burdock or echinacea can help fight the infection. If the infection persists, it's best to see a doctor about taking antibiotics.

Scalp Maintenance Tips

Now that we’ve reviewed some of the most common scalp issues, lets learn how to prevent flare-ups by maintaining a healthy scalp routine.

  1. Wash your hair regularly. Your hair washing schedule should depend on the health of your scalp and your daily activity. If you suffer from any of the the scalp issues listed above, it's best for you to wash your hair daily to avoid build-up and treat infections. The same goes for those of you hitting the gym with sweaty work-out sessions. Remember to choose a shampoo that will gently soothe your symptoms and help remove unwanted dead skin.
  2. Exfoliate your scalp once per week. Dead skin cells can accumulate under your hair system, causing your adhesive to lose strength and your scalp to become itchy and uncomfortable. Use a scalp exfoliation product, like our Euro Exfoliating Scrub for a healthy scalp and to extend the life of your hair system’s adhesive.
  3. Massage your scalp. Help increase the circulation to your scalp by massaging the area once a week for 15 mins. This helps bring oxygenated blood to your scalp and fresh nutrients to the surrounding tissue. A great place to do this is in the bath or shower using gentle circular motions all around your head. If you have any scalp issues consider using one of the scalp remedies listed above to help nurture your scalp during your massage.
  4. Use a high-quality liquid adhesive or tape remover. These products will remove any excess tape or adhesive from your scalp. We also recommend using a product like Walker’s Scalp Scrub which contains natural ingredients like aloe and coconut oil to give your scalp a thorough cleaning and helps keep it moisturized.

By taking these steps, you will be able to reduce irritation and scalp problems. Treating your scalp with care will help alleviate uncomfortable systems and leave it in perfect condition for wearing your hair system.
