Hair extensions are a popular way to add volume and length to your hair. Whether you want to cover up a bad haircut, experiment with color, or create a glamorous, red carpet hairstyle, good-quality hair extensions create an effortlessly natural and glamorous look. Unlike synthetic hair replacement systems and other natural human hair wigs that don’t fare well with heated styling tools, Remy human hair extensions are incredibly easy to style. Whether you’ve got a clip-in or tape-in hair extension, we’ve put together a quick guide on how to straighten your hair extension in three easy steps.
Heads up! Temporary clip-in hair extensions are better straightened off your head, while permanent tape-in hair extensions can only be straightened on your head. Always check with the manufacturer beforehand that they can withstand heat and will return to their natural curly state, to avoid permanent damage. If you like to wear your hair straight the majority of the time, consider buying a hair extension with a straight hairstyle. Remy hair extensions are available in a wide variety of colors, lengths, and textures, and can be customized to fit your dream hairstyle. That way you don’t need to worry about straightening your hair extension and you can curl it on occasion when the moment feels right!
Step 1: Prepare your hair extension
Before you get the flat iron out you need to prep your hair extension, just like you would with your natural hair. Start with a heat protector spray. Evenly distribute it across the hair extension and gently comb it through with a loop brush to make sure all the hair is protected. Be careful not to use too much product as if your hair extension is wet, the heat from a flat iron can cause it to sizzle.
Lay your hair extension out on a flat surface and separate it into sections. This applies particularly to the bigger wefts as this will allow you to ensure each piece is sleek and evenly straightened.
Make sure the flat iron is under 200 degrees. Any higher and you could permanently damage the hair extension. Secure the clip-in base with one hand and slowly run the flat iron through your hair extension from the base to the ends, avoiding the clip. Your hair extension should use the flat iron straightener on a low heat level, as opposed to going straight in with high heat. That way you can take your time while straightening and go over it a few times if necessary. Continue until the hair is completely smooth, silky, and straight and then clip the extensions in and run some moisturizing serum through both your natural hair and Remy hair extensions.
Follow step 1 for clip-in hair extensions and apply it to both your hair extension and natural hair.
Divide your hair into four sections so you don’t miss a strand. Separate your hair into two, with a top half and bottom half, from the middle of your scalp down to the nape of your neck. Clip up the top half of the hair so it is out of the way, then divide the hair below into two even sections and bring them over both shoulders.
Make sure the flat iron is under 200 degrees. Any higher and you could permanently damage both the hair extension and your natural hair. Start with one side, taking a small section of hair at a time, and slowly run the flat iron through your hair extension from the base to the ends, avoiding the tape. Once the section is straightened, throw it over your shoulder and repeat until the bottom half is perfectly straight. Next, divide the top half of the hair in two with a comb down the middle parting. Leave one half clipped up out of the way and continue straightening the other. Once that section is straightened, unclip the last section and straighten. Then, evenly distribute some moisturizing serum throughout your hair and fix it into place with a spritz of hairspray.
One of the biggest fears when it comes to managing heated styling tools like flat irons is burning your hair system. Minimize these chances by using a low heat level, ensuring the hairpiece is completely dry before straightening, using a heat protector, and keeping both your hair and your hair system moisturized. Leave-in conditioners and hair serums are a great way to give your hair a boost in moisture and keep it looking healthy and lustrous, and feeling silky smooth.
