How many hairpieces should you own? That's a question every will eventually ask themselves at least once.
And for such a basic and essential question like that, you’d be surprised at how hard it is to answer.
“How many hairpieces should you own?” is a tough question to answer because there is no precise amount or magic formula that will give you a certain number, it mostly comes down to both personal preference and your lifestyle choices.
That’s not to say there are no wrong answers of course. Having just one hairpiece is a dangerous game to play, if by any chance that hairpiece or hair system was to become badly damaged in any sort of way, you’ll be either:
A) Stuck in your house until a replacement hair system arrives, that's assuming you get your hair systems from an online provider. And even then, you’d had to take a trip to your trusted hair stylist to get it styled while wearing a fresh-out-of-the-box hair system.
B) In a situation where other people will know for a fact that you wear hair, not that there’s anything wrong at all with that in any way whatsoever.
Some people are extremely open about the fact that they wear hair, but we at Advent Hair believe that wearing a hair replacement is a very personal choice, and it should be up to the wearer to disclose to his or her close friends and family that he wears a hairpiece, if he or she chooses to do so. What’s the point of having them blend in with your natural hair anyways then?
So having just one hair system is completely out of the question, as there are way too many factors that can damage a hair system.
“But are there really that many ways I can damage my hair? Isn’t that a little bit of an overreaction?” you might be asking yourself, and sure, at first it does sound like an overreaction, but trust us, it’s not.
Here are four of the main ways a hair system can get damaged:
1) Sun damage: Also formally know and oxidation, this happens when, you guessed it, you expose your hair system to direct sunlight for prolonged amounts of time. Oxidation makes the hair strands in your hair system turn a red, brassy, color. These strands pop out like a sore thumb as you can imagine, and they are one of the easiest giveaways to spot when looking for hair system wearers.
Sure, you can stave off this type of hair damage for quite some time with proper care, color correcting shampoos, deep conditioning, and the use of conditioners that include UV protectors, but sun damage is also cumulative. Wear only one hair piece for long enough and it’ll eventually show, no matter how much you care for it.
2) Chlorine / Saltwater damage: Now this is a very specific type of hair damage, as you have to do a particular action in order to experience it: either getting into a swimming pool or swimming in the open sea. Chlorine is a chemical used to rid swimming pools of pollutants in order to make the fit for usage, and saltwater will quickly dehydrate the hair strands and debilitate the base cap.
So yes, both of these factors can do a really nasty number on your hair system. Our recommendation? Have a couple of hair systems dedicated solely to this type of activities, just give them extra care after you put them in contacts with these substances, and be aware that their lifespan will we greatly reduced compared to your other hair systems. Avoiding getting into pools and beaches is an option too, of course, but are you really going to deprive yourself of a good swim from time to time? That’s nuts!
3) Heat damage: Yup, heat is one the main and most common causes of damage in hair systems. Synthetic hair systems should never be heat treated in any sort of way whatsoever, unless really know what you’re doing, with “really” being the keyword here. Human hair systems are an entirely different story as they can, in fact, be styled using heat up to a certain extent, but go overboard with it and you risk permanently damaging your hair piece.
4) Wrong product for the wrong hair system: You’d be surprised at how many people assume all hair systems products are the same, and that any shampoo and conditioner will work just fine on their hair system.
We’ve said it a hundred times in the past and we’ll say it a hundred more times, never ever mix up synthetic hair care products with human hair systems or vice versa. Synthetic and human hair systems have very different structures and care necessities, and mixing products up will permanently damage your hair system.
Those are just some of the ways that you can damage a hair system, and these happen to even the most seasoned hair system wearers.
So the question still remains: How many hairpieces should you own?
Again, no one can give you an exact answer, it all comes down to personal preference. It’s a sort of trial and error thing. A good starting point is something in the ballpark of around 3 to 4 hairpieces per year.
