Having smooth, healthy strands is something pretty much every hair wearer aims for and no wonder; it works the same with our natural hair, we are used to paying some extra attention when it starts to look dull or damaged.
Sometimes heavy tangles get in the way of showing the world your shiny locks. For many, this issue happens more than they would like, which is why we decided to make today’s blog post all about getting rid of those tangles, nice and easy. Go ahead and keep reading if tangled hair is a problem you want to tackle!
So, tangled hair is not something that should keep you up at nights if you own a short-length hair system, although you shouldn’t let it slide either. But for longer hairpieces, tangles can be a real headache. As with everything, our biggest piece of advice is that prevention is key, and we can’t stress that enough. Don’t wait until your hairpiece looks like a bird’s nest to attack this issue.
The problem with tangling is not only that your hair won’t look as good, but it can also cause some serious damage to your wig if you don’t handle it properly. Excessive tangling can cause the hair strands on your hair system to break or worse, fall out.
Since nobody wants that, we’ve got an easy fix for you that works even on the messiest of hair days. However, before getting into details, you can take a look at our in-depth guide on common mistakes that causes tangling and shedding here.
Now, first things first, if you feel like your hair gets tangled and dry really often, you can step up your game and apply a deep conditioner like the Remy Soft's Glam Rocker Recovery Cream to your hairpiece as part of your maintenance routine. It's sulfate-free, color-safe and will work wonders on your hair. What makes it so special? It is made with a blend of natural fruit and leaf extracts that makes your hair soft, moisture rich and manageable again.
But what happens when your hair is already too tangled? If you keep brushing or pulling at it, you risk causing more damage to the precious investment that is your hairpiece. So, here’s a life saver technique that works wonders on hair systems, even when you look at your hairpiece and feel like there’s no recovery from that.
Just make sure you do it at some moment in the day when you have some spare time and not when you’re about to go out the door. This process needs time and the steps must be carefully followed through. Now that you’ve been warned, here we go!
You might want to get a medium-sized container, but this also works if you own a big sink. Either way, the first step is to fill it with hot water, and when we say hot we don’t mean lukewarm. It should be enough water for your hair system to be completely submerged.
The next step has to be done fast or otherwise, it could cause more harm than good. Pour one-quarter of a cup of liquid bleach, mix well and submerge your hair system with its base facing up. Once your hairpiece is completely soaked, start detangling it with your comb or brush.
Remember how we just said this has to be done fast? This is super important. You have to be careful not to let the hair system in contact with the bleach for long, even if it’s just a small amount of bleach, because it could cause hair strands discoloration. A minute and a half is more than enough time.
Rinse your hair system thoroughly to make sure the mixture is off. Extra tip: keep the base facing up while rinsing the hair so it won’t get tangled again.
Next, get rid of the water/bleach mixture and rinse the container before the next step. Once you make sure it is perfectly cleaned and with no traces of bleach left, fill the container once again with hot water and pour a quarter cup of ammonia in it.
Why did we ask you to do this? This is a very serious warning. Bleach and ammonia mixed together can release dangerous fumes, so we don’t kid around when we say you have to make sure you got the bleach out of the sink or container you are using.
So, submerge your hair system in the water/ammonia mix, but this time with the base facing down. Just as before, comb or brush the hair to get rid of those tangles. Once you’re done, you can rinse your hair system thoroughly one last time.
