Hair Replacement for Men: What are my options?

Whether caused by age, genetics or medications, hair loss can be a frustrating condition for men to face, affecting their confidence or social life. Hair loss patients often turn to hair replacement solutions, such as those provided by Hair Club for Men, and other hair loss consultants to determine which ones are right for them.

Before seeking hair replacement treatment, see your primary physician or a dermatologist to determine the cause of your hair loss, which could range from medical to a side-effect of medication or simply genetics that causes male pattern baldness. Your doctor can also tell you whether your hair is strong enough to undergo hair replacement treatment. Be sure to ask if your doctor has treated other hair loss patients and what kinds of treatment were effective for them. For hair transplants, only physicians or hair transplant professionals can recommend candidates for surgical treatment.

After identifying the cause of hair loss and the degree of loss, via the Norwood-Hamilton Scale of Baldness, decide what you want your hair replacement treatment to do for you: from preventing further hair loss, filling in bald spots or completely changing your look through hair transplants.

After consultation on your options, next is a treatment plan. Hair restoration treatment falls under three main categories: surgical, non-surgical and topical.

1. Surgical. Hair restoration surgery or hair transplants, is a permanent solution for hair loss. Today's advanced surgical technology allows for hair to be transplanted as it would grow naturally. During surgery, individual follicles of the donor's existing hair, located either on the sides or bottom of the head, are transplanted to balding or thinning sections of hair. The advantage of hair restoration surgery is it provides quick yet permanent results for hair loss patients.

2. Non-surgical. As opposed to hair restoration surgery, hair replacement is non-surgical. One non-surgical option is the Hair Club's Bio-Matrix Strand-by-Strand process, which fills in your existing hair with real human hair. The Bio-Matrix solution provides men a way to re-create the look and feel of their real hair if they are balding significantly. This option is also suited for those who have bald patches and want to increase the density of their hair. With hair replacement professionals adding human hair strand-by-strand to your scalp, the hair replicates the pattern of your natural hair, blending in seamlessly. Once hair is replaced, its longevity will depend on how well you maintain it.

3. Topical. The last hair restoration option is to apply topical medications used for hair loss treatment, which include Minoxidil. Hair loss medications do not work for all patients and will stop their effectiveness once patients discontinue their use.

In addition to these treatment options, other choices for preventing further hair loss include LaserComb and Extreme Hair Therapy (EXT), which are both hair loss preventative measures. A clinically-tested and FDA-approved, LaserComb is an instrument that uses low-level laser photo therapy to safely stop hair loss and stimulate hair follicle growth. The other hair loss prevention measure is EXT, which combines the topical hair loss treatment Minoxidil with cleansers and nutritional supplements to strengthen hair. Both LaserComb and EXT are inexpensive ways to slow or prevent hairlines from receding.
