Caring for Hair Extensions in Cold Weather

When winter approaches, people all over the world brace for snowstorms, dry air, and overall chilly weather. While coats, boots, sweaters, and heavy pants can help keep you dry and warm, women who wear hair extensions have a unique challenge. Winter weather can cause some serious damage to hair extensions, so it is important to take a few precautions to make sure your hair extensions stay as fresh and healthy looking. The good news is that none of these helpful pointers require a lot of extra work – in fact, you may be performing these suggested tasks every day!

The first thing to remember is that winter air is dry air. When the air is dry, it can suck the moisture right out of your hair extensions. In addition to your regular shampoo and conditioning routine, tack on a few extra steps to make sure your hair extensions stay properly moisturized. During the day, try using a leave-in conditioner. This will not only keep your hair extensions moisturized but also tame any frizz that occurs as a result of dryness. It is also a good idea to give your hair extensions a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Use a hair mask or hot oil treatment, but make sure you don’t apply it too close to your hair extensions’ bonds.

You may think to yourself, “If the cold air of winter causes my hair to dry out, then I should probably use plenty of heat when styling my hair extensions.” It certainly seems like sound logic, but unfortunately it is not true. Using heat styling tools with excessive heat can wreak havoc on your hair extensions, especially if they are already dry from cold air. The best way to avoid damage when styling is to make sure the tools you are using are the right ones for the job. A diffuser is probably your best bet to make sure you aren’t damaging your hair while styling. If you don’t have a diffuser, any hair styling tool that features ceramic plates will keep your hair from being exposed to too much heat.
