Imagine that you are happily wearing your hair piece and suddenly you realize that it has an unpleasant smell. Or you may not even notice the smell until someone points it out to you! The last thing you want is for your hair piece to make you feel self conscious. Though don’t worry, by following our appropriate washing and hygiene habits you will be able to tackle this problem head on and make sure that you continue to feel comfortable using your proper cleaned hair system and become a pro in maintaining your hair piece.

Washing & Hygiene

The most important factor in the smell and maintenance of your hair system is hygiene. You must regularly wash your hairpiece to avoid unpleasant smells. Humidity, tobacco smoke, sweat, product build-up and even everyday dust can all cause bad odors in your hair system. Appropriate washing and hygiene habits can even help to prevent bad smells in the first place.

It is also important that you know how to store your hairpiece when you are not wearing it. You must make sure that the hairpiece is completely dry before folding it and storing it in a box or packet. If you do not dry your hair system fully before storing it, it will end up with a damp musty smell when you take it out of storage. A quick and easy storage tip is to place a dryer sheet inside of your hairpiece before folding it into a box. This technique will allow you to enjoy a fresh hair piece each time you want to use it. Hygiene is a huge step in preventing odors from forming in your hairpiece - fixing a problem before it even starts.

Ensuring All Growing Hair is Dry

Another way to prevent bad smells is to ensure that your growing hair is completely dry before attaching your hairpiece. Placing your hairpiece on a mass of wet or damp hair will produce a musty smell, which can be easily prevented by ensuring your have dry hair. By preventing a musty smell from the start you will be better able to avoid bad odors from forming in your clean hair system.

In any case, we are aware that over time, your hairpiece might start to lose that fresh scent. Though don’t worry, If you sense that this is happening, we have some simple tricks to eliminate those unwanted smells from your fresh hair piece.

The Dryer Sheet Quick Fix

If you’re in a hurry when you realize that your dirty hair piece has a bad odor, then you should grab a dryer sheet. First, place the hairpiece on a hanger and applying pressure while gently wiping a dryer sheet down the hairpiece. This will release scented particles through the hairpiece and even act as a nifty shine remover. Shake out the wig and brush it to remove any excess particles. Now you have a fresh and clean hairpiece in only a matter of seconds.

The Baking Soda Miracle

The second tip… Baking Soda! Yes, who would have thought? It’s amazing how many things baking soda can be used for- in this case it can be used to neutralize nasty odors and serve as a softener for synthetic hair. A two-for-one trick! There are two ways to implement this tip into your hairpiece hygiene routine - you can either add a teaspoon of baking soda to your hair system washing mixture, or fully dilute a few teaspoons in your sink and let the hair system to soak for 10-30 minutes. If you choose the second option make sure to fully rinse the hair system with cold water to ensure any chalky residue is removed. Your dirty hair piece will be something from the past now. Feeling a bit more creative? Our next tip is for you!

The Apple Cider Vinegar Solution

For removing any aroma that may still persist after all the aforementioned methods, apple cider vinegar is the one and only neutralizer! Not only does this solution rid the hairpiece of any funky smells, but it also gets rid of any chemicals that may be left on your hair system. All you have to do is pour a cup of apple cider vinegar into a sink full of warm water and soak your hairpiece. You will then start to see any residues left on your hair system start to come off forming a thin layer on the top of the water. At this point, you must rinse off the hair system and let it dry for a couple of hours. After it is completely dry, we recommend that you wash the hairpiece with shampoo and fabric conditioner to eliminate any remaining vinegar smell. You will walk out of your door with a complete fresh hair piece and you don’t have to worry about your hair system hygiene again.

We hope that these tips will help you to prevent and get rid of odors in your hair system! We are certain that after applying these techniques, the smell from your hairpiece will be a thing of the past and you will feel confident again wearing!
