Can you Blow Dry a Wig Without Damaging it?

We’ve talked about how to properly clean your hair systems in the past, but how exactly should you dry them after cleaning them?

Drying your hairpiece is an important part of your whole hair system maintenance routine. If you know how to correctly blow dry your hair system, you’ll create the style you want, keep your hairpiece in good condition, and ensure it lasts longer without long-term damage. Find out more about how long wigs last in our blog post on the topic.

In fact, the final look of a hairpiece largely depends on the way it was dried, as drying can make or break a hairpiece.

While you can of course dry your hairpiece with the help of a blow dryer, the safest and often most effective method is to try to allow your hair system to air dry naturally.

Today we’ll be exploring several different methods for you to use for drying your hair system. If you want to learn more about washing your hair system, read more about choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your system.

There are a couple of different methods you can choose from when blow-drying your hair system. These options depend on whether you have a hairpiece stand at home.

If you have a hairpiece stand at home, try using this method:

  1. Gently squeeze your hairpiece to get the water out.

  2. Wrap the hairpiece in a dry towel and squeeze it a few more times. Don’t rub your hairpiece with the towel as this can encourage friction and for tangles to form.

  3. Turn the hairpiece upside down and shake it a few times to get rid of any remaining excess water.

  4. Place the wet hairpiece onto your stand just like you would place it on your own head. If your stand is a soft one instead of a hard plastic one, try securing your hairpiece in place with a few pins.

  5. Style your hairpiece according to your preferences. We recommend using your fingers. If you prefer using a hairbrush or a comb, make sure to be gentle.

  6. Ideally, we recommend air drying your hairpiece. Depending on the density and hair length of the hairpiece, it could take up to 10 hours for it to dry completely.

  7. We suggest leaving your hairpiece to dry all night and it should be dry by the morning.

  8. When you wake up, you should find a knot-free and perfectly styled hairpiece.

Make sure to remove any excess water from your hair system stand with a clean towel. Find out more about detangling your hairpiece safely.

Don’t have a hairpiece stand? Try following these steps for a perfectly dried hairpiece.

  1. Gently squeeze your hairpiece to remove excess water.

  2. Wrap the hairpiece in a dry towel and squeeze it a few more times. Don’t rub the hairpiece as this can cause friction and dreaded tangles!

  3. Turn the hairpiece upside down and shake any remaining water out.

  4. Use a wire hanger or a hanger clip to hang your hairpiece. Find a place with good air circulation. Remember to hang your hairpiece upside down.

  5. If possible, hang your hair system on your shower head and leave the bathroom window and door open. It will dry super-fast and there won’t be any mess to clean up.

  6. Depending on the density and hair length of the hairpiece, it can take up to ten hours for it to dry up completely. Our advice? Leave it to dry around 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm and it should be 100% dry in the morning.

  7. Take your hair system off of the hanger and turn it right side up. Give it a couple of extra shakes just in case.

  8. Gently brush your hairpiece a couple of times to get rid of any knots and voilà! It should look brand spanking new again!

Using a Blow-Dryer on Your Hair System

While we recommend air drying your hair naturally, there are a few occasions when you may prefer or need to use a blow dryer for styling your hair system. Whether you’re in a rush or you’re trying to achieve a specific look, sometimes a blow dryer is a great option for styling your hairpiece.

But remember, using a blow dryer is only recommended for human hair systems. Using a blow dryer, or any other heated styling tool on a synthetic hair system risks irreversibly damaging the strands of the hairpiece.

Here is how you can safely blow-dry your human hair hairpiece:

  1. Remove any excess water from your hairpiece.

  2. Gently comb through your hairpiece with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush.

  3. Put your blow dryer on the lowest heat setting and point the dryer at your hair system - no closer than 2 or 3 inches to your scalp.

  4. Start at the roots and make your way down the strands.

  5. You can use round-headed or barrel shaped brushes to build volume or curls - depending on your personal preferences.
